Our Principal served as the PM for both the design and full service Construction Management services for the City of Coachella new Avenue 52 grade separation, spanning over the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) and Grapefruit Boulevard (also known as Highway 111).
The project added a new connector road by extending Sunset Drive, from Avenue 52 to Grapefruit Boulevard. The project consisted of constructing a raised roadway on Avenue 52 from Calle Limon to Tyler Street/Industrial Way with a new three span, 348-foot long overhead structure to accommodate an ultimate six lane corridor concept, widening of Grapefruit Boulevard, and extending Sunset Drive to reconnect Avenue 52 with Grapefruit Boulevard. The project included major utility relocations, drainage, mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) retaining walls, pavement, curb and gutter, sidewalks, three new traffic signals, intersection improvements, reconstruction of some commercial driveways, UPRR flagging during construction, crossing panels and signal removal work; and CPUC GO-88B. The City and the Team adopted Caltrans construction manual procedures, processes, and forms to comply with Caltrans and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) funding requirements.
The Team was responsible for constructability review; construction project advertising, bid analysis and award; contract administration; office engineering; public outreach; construction inspection, landscape inspection, surveying and materials testing; utility relocation and coordination; UPRR coordination and contractor interface; critical path method schedule review and analysis; and potential claims resolution.
The team also provided construction staking services for the Grade Separation including all street improvements, underground and overhead utilities, bridge abutments, bridge deck, and right of way lines.
